Why work with an independent agent?

And.. what the heck does “independent agent” really mean?

There are two basic types of insurance agents: Independent and Captive

The simple difference:

  • Independent agents work for their clients and have access to multiple life insurance companies and policies. Their role is to advise and assist. They are business owners who make their own choices on how to best serve their clients.

  • Captive agents work for ONE life insurance company. They are often employees of the insurance company and only have access to the policies available by that company. They are required to meet quotas to keep their job.

Wall Family Life is comprised of INDEPENDENT Life insurance agents.

Working with an independent life insurance agent can offer several advantages compared to going directly through a captive agent (who represents only one company) or trying to research and buy insurance entirely on your own. Here's why:

1. Access to Multiple Insurance Companies

Independent agents aren't tied to one insurer. They shop for you, based on your needs and what you’ll qualify for with multiple companies, which helps you:

  • Find the best rates.

  • Compare different types of policies (term, whole, universal).

  • Match your situation with an insurer known for accepting similar profiles (e.g., smokers, high-risk individuals, certain health conditions).

2. Unbiased Recommendations

Because they aren’t working for a single insurance company, independent agents can offer objective advice. Their goal is to match you with the right policy, not to sell a specific company's product.

3. Customized Solutions

Independent agents can tailor your coverage to your unique financial goals, family situation, and health background. They’re especially valuable for:

  • People with complex needs (e.g., estate planning, business protection).

  • Those with health conditions or unusual underwriting profiles.

  • Those who have a specific budget.

4. Time and Effort Savings

Instead of applying to several insurers yourself, an independent agent can:

  • Gather your information once.

  • Submit it to multiple companies.

  • Come back with quotes and options—saving you hours of work.

5. Advocacy and Support

Independent agents act as your advocate throughout the process:

  • They help with paperwork.

  • They clarify confusing policy language.

  • They support you in claim situations and renewals.

6. Ongoing Relationship

Many independent agents offer ongoing service, checking in periodically to ensure your coverage still meets your needs, especially after major life events (such as marriage, having children, or purchasing a home, etc…).

When Might You Not Need One?

If you’re shopping for a very basic term policy, are in excellent health, and prefer DIY solutions, you might be fine using an online platform. But even then, an independent agent could help you avoid underwriting surprises or hidden costs. An independent agent is able to walk you through the downsides to policies that you may not otherwise know to look for (like increasing premiums, or decreasing coverage amounts).
